Joseph Phelps Vineyards

In 1973 Joe Phelps bought a 600-acre cattle ranch in Spring Valley, and began planting vineyards. His winery was completed in 1974 and the first Insignia blend was produced. It put Joe Phelps on the map of top Napa Valley wine producers. Our goal of becoming 100% estate grown resulted in carefully planned acquisitions of prime vineyards in the Napa Valley. Today, the Phelps estate consists of 7 prime vineyard locations in 6 different AVA’s in Napa Valley. Through the years, Joe searched for the ideal spot to grow both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and his search ended when the perfect location was found in Freestone, located on the Sonoma Coast. Today, 80 acres of Pinot Noir and 20 acres of Chardonnay produce estate-grown wines bearing the Joseph Phelps name.
